How to Make Effects on Flipnote Studio

Flipnote Studio is an animation program developed for the Nintendo DSi. The program uses the DSi's touch-screen interface to allow artists to draw and animate with the DSi Stylus. You can then share your creation with other artists online at the Flipnote Hatena. Although it may seem like a simple animation program, a number of advanced techniques and effects are available to Flipnote artists. To begin using advanced effects, tap the wrench icon on the bottom left corner of the screen.

Instructions

    • 1

Tap the selection icon at the top of the screen to bring up the selection tools. Select a part of your animation frame with the selection tool. From here you can copy the selection, move it to another part of the canvas, delete it or change the size using the resize tools. Blow into the microphone to fill a selection entirely with paint.

    • 2

Add a new layer to your animation in advanced mode by clicking the "Layers" tab with your stylus. Using layers allows you to manipulate one part of the animation while preserving the rest of the frame. For example, draw a static background on the bottom layer and a moving object on the top layer to give the effect of a setting.

    • 3

Create new colors by blending colors between two layers. Each layer may use only one color, but if you mix textures between layers you can create a new color. For example, combine blue on the top layer and red on the bottom to create purple.

    • 4

Switch between a white background and a black background by clicking the corresponding color on your animation palette. Change the color back and forth with each frame to create a strobe effect that makes your animations look more dynamic.

    • 5

Hold down the "L" or "R" button when using the line or fill tool to select different patterns and sizes. Hold down the "Start" button when using the line tool to make a straight line. To make a diagonal straight line, hold down the "Select" button. Holding both "Start" and "Select" creates a perfect square.

    • 6

Add sound effects to your animation by clicking on the "Record" button on the top part of the screen. Use the built-in DSi microphone to create sound effects live while your animation is playing. If you want to use a previously recorded sound effect, hold down the "L" button when you click the "Record" button to use any sound file saved to your DSi.
