How to Get the Rock Smash Ability in Pokemon HeartGold Edition

When your adventure begins in "Pokémon HeartGold," parts of the Johto region are inaccessible to you. For example, some roads and caves are blocked by large boulders and it looks like there is no way inside. To tackle this type of obstacle, you need HM06, better known as "Rock Smash." Pokémon who know Rock Smash destroy boulders with a swipe of their claws. After you get the Plain Badge in Goldenrod City, you also pick up an item called the "Squirt Bottle." This Squirt Bottle awakens a sleeping Sudowoodo and unblocks the path to the man who gives you Rock Smash.

  Go north from Route 34 to reach Goldenrod City. Continue to walk north through Goldenrod City until you exit to Route 35.

  Turn right on Route 36 when you get to the National Park. Soon after you make this turn, you reach a junction blocked by a Sudowoodo.

  Spray the Sudowoodo with water from the squirt bottle to wake it up and fight it. Catch the Sudowoodo with a Poké Ball, if desired, since this is the only place to find this Pokémon in Johto.

  Walk to the east until you pass the Ruins of Alph to the south. A man walks around in circles near the entrance to Violet City. Talk to him to get Rock Smash.
