How to Get a Steel Axe on Dragon Quest

"Dragon Quest IX" has an in-depth alchemy system that allows you to create new weapons and armor by combining old equipment with raw materials. Some weapons, like the steel axe, can only be acquired through this alchemy system. The steel axe is a useful weapon for characters in the gladiator or ranger vocations, and as you make your way through the game and come across more raw materials, it can be further alchemized into the stronger gigasteel axe.

Things You'll Need

Iron axe
Iron ore
Lava lump

Instructions

  Purchase an iron axe from the weapon shop at Port Llaffan. This is the main ingredient in the steel axe recipe.

  Collect the lava lumps from the beach area to the west of Alltrades Abbey. They appear as shiny specks near a crack in the ground.

  Collect the iron ore from the rocky plain to the east of Port Llaffan. Several pieces of this ore can be found against the northwestern wall of these plains.

  Use the Zoom spell to return to Stornway. Visit the inn and talk to the pot sitting on the front counter. Choose "Try Your Luck" from the available options and put one lump of iron ore, one lava lump and the iron axe into the pot. Press "X" to alchemize these materials. This will give you one steel axe.
