The Advantages of Ghost Pokemon

Those unfamiliar with ghost Pokemon may find them mysterious and hard to understand. Ghosts are among the most technical of Pokemon types, and to use them effectively in battle, a trainer must learn how to manage their abilities. Ghost Pokemon have a few weaknesses, but these are balanced by several types of strengths and surprisingly powerful moves.
  1. Super-Effective Attacks

    • Ghost attacks are only super-effective against two Pokemon types, but in most battles, this does not matter as much as you may think. Ghost moves are naturally powerful and do large amounts of damage to almost any Pokemon, whether the move is considered super-effective against that type or not. Ghost moves are super-effective against psychic Pokemon that include Mew and Deoxys. Strangely, ghost attacks are also super-effective against other ghosts.

    Defensive Advantages

    • Ghost Pokemon focus more on special defense than they do on physical defense, so a powerful elemental attack, including Thunder or Ice Beam, is usually enough to defeat them. Fortunately, ghost Pokemon have four defensive advantages in battle. They are completely immune to fighting and normal-type moves. If an opponent uses such a move against a ghost Pokemon, he loses his turn, giving you the upper hand. Unfortunately, normal-type Pokemon are also immune to ghost attacks. Bug and poison attacks are largely ineffective against ghosts.

    Ghost Moves

    • Ghost Pokemon employ cunning and trickery in battle, using moves that confuse and disorient foes. For example, a ghost Pokemon can put an enemy to sleep, causing it to lose several turns. It can then use Nightmare, a move that causes the victim to lose 25 percent of its maximum health for each turn it remains asleep. Another crafty move is Destiny Bond. When used, if the user faints, its opponent automatically faints, also. The extremely powerful Shadow Force move lets a ghost avoid all damage during the first turn. In the second turn, the ghost unleashes a deadly blow on the foe.

    Ghost Abilities

    • All Ghost Pokemon have a variety of abilities that are active at all times during battle. For instance, the Pressure ability decreases the PP of an opponent's move, meaning that they can use that move fewer times. Many ghost types have the Levitate ability, which renders them immune to ground-type moves. When an opponent uses a protective move, like Light Screen or Reflect, a ghost Pokemon's Infiltrator ability completely negates the effects of the move.

    Prominent Ghost Pokemon

    • Perhaps the most powerful ghost Pokemon is Giratina, which is half ghost and half dragon, and its ominous appearance is terrifying in battle. Three of the original ghost Pokemon, Haunter, Gengar and Ghastly, are still well-known and sought after by trainers today. Spirtomb, a rare half ghost, half dark-type, has so few weaknesses that it is virtually guaranteed to win a fight. The ghost-type Froslass is also half ice-type, and it brings the awe-inspiring power of moves such as Blizzard and Aurora Beam into battle.
