How to Get a Shiny Charizard and a Rayquaza in Soul Silver

Shiny Pokemon are alternately colored versions of Pokemon in "Pokemon SoulSilver" and many other Pokemon games. They are extremely rare -- the odds of encountering a wild shiny Pokemon are one in 8192, meaning that players can go through entire game without even seeing one (with the exception of a red Gyarados that is part of the game's storyline). Shiny Pokemon have the same stats as normal Pokemon, but their rarity makes them prized among players, especially when the shiny Pokemon are popular species such as Charizard or Rayquaza.

Instructions

  1. Obtaining Charizard

    • 1

Obtain all 16 badges and speak to Professor Oak in Pallet Town to obtain HM08 (Rock Climb) and gain access to Mt. Silver. Go to Viridian City and travel west until you reach the gate house, then proceed further west. Cross the fields until you reach Mt. Silver.

    • 2

Proceed through Mt. Silver until you reach the snowy peak. Battle Red on the summit -- he has a level 88 Pikachu, level 84 Venusaur, level 84 Charizard, level 84 Blastoise, level 80 Lapras and a level 82 Snorlax. It will constantly hail during the battle.

    • 3

Defeat Red and wait for the credits to finish. Reload the game and go back to Professor Oak, who will allow you to choose one of the original Kanto starter Pokemon. Save your game and select Charmander, then check its status screen to see if it is shiny. Reload the game and try again if it is not -- other than trading with someone who already has a shiny Charmander, Charmeleon or Charizard, this is the only legitimate way to obtain a shiny Charmander in SoulSilver.

    • 4

Raise the shiny Charmander to level 16 to evolve it into Charmeleon -- it will retain its shininess after evolving. Raise the Charmeleon to level 36 to evolve it into a shiny Charizard.

    Obtaining Rayquaza

    • 5

Earn all 16 badges, defeat Red and visit Professor Oak to receive a Kanto starter Pokemon. Go to Route 30 and speak to Mr. Pokemon to receive the Red Orb.

    • 6

Go to Cianwood City and assemble a Pokemon party that has access to both the moves Surf and Rock Climb. Enter the cave north of the Gym and speak to Chuck, then proceed out the west exit of the cave.

    • 7

Go west along the path and enter the cave at the end. Take the ladder leading down and go outside. Use Surf and travel as far west as you can until you encounter a scalable cliff. Use Rock Climb to scale the cliffs and enter the cave at the top to find the Embedded Tower. Save the game and then fight and capture Groudon.

    • 8

Trade with a "Pokemon HeartGold" game to obtain a Kyogre -- you cannot use a Kyogre transferred from Sapphire or Emerald for this task. Put both Groudon and Kyogre in your party and visit Mr. Pokemon again to obtain the Jade Orb. Return to the Embedded Tower to encounter Rayquaza.

    • 9

Obtain a shiny Rayquaza by saving before encountering it and then resetting if it is not shiny.
