How to Get Out of the Cave Before Blackthorn City

Before reaching Blackthorn City in "Pokemon Gold" and "Pokemon Silver" you must first traverse the Ice Path. It is a cave situated in the northern climes of the Johto region, and is one of the most difficult and challenging areas in the game. If you don't navigate through correctly you may find yourself stuck permanently, and without an Escape Rope you may have to reset the game and start again from the last saved point.

Instructions

  Cross the first floor by traversing the ice. When stepping on an icy pathway you will slide along the ground, so you will be unable to control the player in the usual way. You will need to use walls and boulders to help stop and change direction. For the first section of ice, go right, down, right, down and then right again to get past it.

  Follow the path around until you reach the second patch of ice. From here push up on the D-pad and then left. You will hit a boulder that will stop your movement in the middle of the path. Navigate through using the other boulders to help you stop. Continue up, right, up, right, down, left, up, left, down, right, down, right and then up. Press right and you will slide onto more tolerable terrain.

  Skip the northern route for now and take the right path. Once more you will have to venture through slippery ice. This can be managed a lot easier if you step onto the ice from the higher of the two entrance points. Go right and you'll be taken straight to the furthest boulder. Then go up, left, down, left, up and right to maneuver toward the HM07, which teaches the Hidden Move, Waterfall.

  Take the northern path around and climb the ladder to the next level. On this floor you will need to have a Pokemon use Strength to push the movable rocks into the holes in the floor. Push the lowest rock once to the right. This will give you enough space to get above the rock to push it downward and into the hole. Push the remaining rocks into the other holes. These will help you to navigate through the icy path underneath.

  Jump down the hole in the middle of the room onto the icy ground. Go left, up and then right. Take the Full Heal and climb the ladder to the next level. Pick up the Nevermeltice by going around to the other side of the room or by making a shortcut with Rock Smash. Climb another ladder to the next floor.

  Go right and slide across the ice. Go up the stairs and around to the other side. Press down to slide to the next ladder and head to the next floor. There is one final ice path that can be crossed by pressing down, right and up. Go left to the central boulder, then up, left and down. Now go right and climb the ladder to the last floor of the cave.

  Walk straight down, jump the ledge and continue to the exit. Save your game upon reaching the end of the cave. You can now pass through into Blackthorn City, where you can obtain the final gym badge of the Johto region.
