How Do I Get My N5 to Work on the NDSL?

The N5 DS Revolution is a flash cart for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite. Flash carts let you play user-created "homebrew" games, download apps for your Nintendo DS and open media files like video and music. Before getting your N5 to work on your DS, you'll need to download the latest firmware from the manufacturer's website, ensuring your N5 is up-to-date. If your N5 didn't come included with a MicroSD card, you'll have to purchase one separately before beginning.

Things You'll Need

  • N5 DS cartridge
  • MicroSD card
  • MicroSD card reader (usually included with the N5)

Instructions

  1. Formatting Your MicroSD Card

    • 1

Plug your MicroSD card into the MicroSD card reader that came with your N5. Plug the card reader into an open USB slot on your computer.

    • 2

Click the "Start" orb, and select "Computer." Right-click the microSD card's drive, which is likely labeled "Removable Drive" or "Removable Media."

    • 3

Select "Format" and ensure the "File System" type is set to "FAT32." Click "Start" and wait while the card is formatted to work with the N5.

    Download and Extraction

    • 4

Open your Web browser, type "dsn5.com/en/" into the address bar and hit "Enter." Click the "Download" link near the top of the official N5 website.

    • 5

Scroll down to the "n5 kernel Download" section. Click the link for the English version of the software, and choose to save the file.

    • 6

Download a program for extracting .RAR files. Open the download and follow the on-screen instructions to install the program.

    • 7

Click the Windows "Start" orb, and type "Downloads" into the search bar. Click the "Downloads" folder, and look for the N5 .rar file. Right-click it, and select "extract here." For 7-Zip users, hover over "7-zip," then select "extract here." This will create a new folder in your "Downloads" folder with the same name as the N5 .rar file you just downloaded.

    Setting Up the N5

    • 8

Open the unzipped n5 folder and you'll see two folders and four files. Highlight them all by clicking under the last file and dragging your mouse so the highlighted box covers all six items.

    • 9

Right-click any of the items. Select "Copy" from the context menu.

    • 10

Click the "Start" orb and "Computer." Double-click the MicroSD card's drive to open it. Right-click anywhere within the folder, and select "Paste" to transfer the folders and files to the MicroSD card.

    • 11

Copy your music, video, image or homebrew files over to the MicroSD card using the same method. When finished, remove the USB card reader from your computer, and pull the MicroSD card free.

    • 12

Place the MicroSD card into your N5 DS' MicroSD slot. Insert the N5 cartridge into your Nintendo DS, like a normal game, and turn it on.
