How to Dig Up Hidden Items in Pokemon

The Nintendo DS Pokemon games in the "Diamond/Pearl/Platinum" series, "HeartGold/SoulSilver" series and "Black/White" series include the ability to dig up hidden items. In "Diamond," "Pearl" and Platinum," the Underground provides a maze of tunnels containing buried spheres, fossils and rare items. In all the games, the Dowsing Machine, also known as the Item Finder, allows you to uncover hidden items on the ground as you travel the game map. In "Diamond," "Pearl" and "Platinum" the Item Finder is part of your Poketch device. In the other games, the Dowsing Machine is a separate device stored in your inventory.

Instructions

  1. The "Diamond," "Pearl" and "Platinum" Underground

    • 1

Start your "Pokemon Diamond," "Pokemon Pearl" or "Pokemon Platinum" game. Walk to Eterna City.

    • 2

Speak to the old man standing next to the Eterna City Pokemon Center. He will give you an Explorer Kit that allows you to access the Underground.

    • 3

Listen to and complete the old man's requests. Before you have free use of the Underground for your own digging, you must complete three tasks for the man.

    • 4

Select the "Explorer Kit" from your game menu to return to the Underground for your own purposes.

    • 5

Walk up and down the tunnels in the Underground. When you see a sparkle on a wall, stop in front of it and press the "A" button to dig.

    • 6

Tap the touchscreen with your stylus to chip away the rock to reveal hidden items. Every chip you make weakens the wall, so the challenge is to chip away enough rock to reveal an item before the wall collapses. When you uncover an object completely, it goes into your inventory.

Using the Item Finder or Dowsing Machine

    • 7

Walk to Route 207 in "Pokemon Diamond," "Pokemon Pearl" or "Pokemon Platinum" to receive the Item Finder, renamed Dowsing Machine in "Platinum," from your friend Dawn or Lucas. Dawn appears if your trainer is a boy, and Lucas appears if your trainer is a girl. The Item Finder/Dowsing Machine becomes another app in the Poketch device that is displayed on the DS touchscreen when you aren't in battle.

    • 8

Walk to Ecruteak City in "Pokemon HeartGold" or "Pokemon SoulSilver" to receive the Dowsing Machine, abbreviated Dowsing MCHN in the game menu, from the boy in the house to the left of the Ecruteak City Pokemon Center.

    • 9

Walk to Nacrene City in "Pokemon Black" or "Pokemon White" and battle gym leader Lenora at the Nacrene City Gym. When you exit the gym building after defeating the gym leader, your friend Bianca will give you the Dowsing Machine.

    • 10

Walk to any area on the game map and activate the Item Finder/Dowsing Machine. In "Diamond," "Pearl" and "Platinum," tap the stylus on the touchpad to choose the Item Finder Poketch app, then tap the radar circle to start searching. In the other games, press the "X" button to open the game menu and choose the Dowsing Machine from the Key Items tab. In "HeartGold" and "SoulSilver," tap the touchscreen to search. In "Black" and "White" the Dowsing Machine automatically detects items without you needing to tap.

    • 11

Look for blips on the Item Finder/Dowsing Machine radar, or arrows if you're playing "Black" or "White," that tell you when a hidden object is near. The device also emits a sound that grows higher in pitch as you approach a hidden object.

    • 12

Walk to the spot next to the position indicated on the Item Finder/Dowswing Machine screen. Turn your trainer with the "D-pad" key to face the indicated spot. Press the "A" button to dig up the hidden object. The game tells you what you found and places the item in your inventory.
