Battle Experience
The most common way for players to gain experience points in "Final Fantasy Tactics A2" is by defeating enemies in battle. All characters in the battle gain an equal share of the experience points won, unless they have become petrified or are knocked unconscious during the fight. Petrified and unconscious characters do not gain experience points until they have been cured or revived.
Quests
Characters can also gain experience for completing various quests in the game. These can either be part of the main story quest line or side quests given by non-player characters throughout the game. Quests can vary from defeating a specific monster, such as in the quest "Stranger in the Woods" which is obtained at the beginning of the game, to collecting items like a sample of muskmallow for the "Reagent Run" quest.
Character level
Experience points gained from combat and questing are accumulated throughout the game. Once a character's experience point pool reaches a predetermined amount, they will gain a level. Characters start out at Level 1 and can reach a maximum level cap of Level 99.
Ability points
Players can also gain ability points for their characters from combat and questing. Ability points are obtained at a slower rate than experience points. Instead of leveling-up your character, they are used to level-up your character's equipped job. You must first select a specific job for the character from the "Job" menu and equip items only usable by that job. With each level gained for a character's job, new abilities are unlocked for that character.
