What Is the DSi XL?

The DSi XL is a portable handheld video gaming device developed by Nintendo. The DSi XL constitutes only a minor upgrade over the Nintendo DSi. Nintendo released the DSi XL in Japan in 2009 and in the U.S. in 2010. It was designed to compete directly against Sony's PlayStation Portable device. The DSi XL features a pair of display screens, two integrated digital cameras, Wi-Fi functionality, e-book support and a memory card slot.

    • The Nintendo DSi XL measures 6.3 inches wide, 3.6 inches tall and 0.8 inches thick at its thickest point with its lid closed. It weighs 11.1 oz. before optional upgrades and accessories. The DSi XL has 16MB of RAM, 256MB of on-board flash memory storage, an ARM7 and an ARM9 processor with a clock speed of 133MHz. An integrated rechargeable battery supplies on-board power to the DSi XL. The battery provides users with four to five hours of battery life at maximum screen brightness and 17 hours at minimum brightness. An included AC adapter supplies external power to the device.

    Multimedia And Controls

    • The DSi XL features a pair of display screens, both of which measure 4.2 inches diagonally. The primarily display is a color TFT active matrix screen that displays up to 256,000 colors. The secondary is a color touchscreen controlled by a stylus. Both of the DSi XL's integrated video cameras are VGA quality with resolutions of 0.3 megapixels. The DSI XL's on-board controls include select and start buttons, an X button, Y button, A button, B button, left and right triggers, and a standard cross-style control pad.

    Cartridges And Software

    • The DSi XL uses standard Nintendo DS game cartridges. Nintendo sells the DSi XL bundled with a suite of software titles, including Brain Age Express -- Arts and Letters, Brain Age Express -- Math, Flipnote Studio, DSi Web Browser and Photo Clock.

    Additional Information

    • The DSi XL features an integrated microphone and a pair of stereo speakers for audio playback. Nintendo equips each DSi XL with a built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi card for accessing Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection service and the Nintendo Shop over the Internet and local area networks. The DSi XL comes in wine red, dark brown, green, yellow, burgundy and natural white, depending on the country of purchase. Each DSi XL ships bundled with a stylus that measures 3.62 inches in length.
