What Is the Difference Between DSi & DS Lite Action Replay?

Action Replay is a device created for video game systems that allows users to input codes to make the games easier, like the old Game Genie in the late 1980s. It is produced by Datel and a version is made for nearly all video game systems. The devices for the Nintendo DSi and DS Lite hold many similarities, but there are a few key differences.
  1. Compatibility

    • The Action Replay for Nintendo DSi is compatible with all the DS devices that came before it, while the version for the DS Lite, will not be able to make the jump and work with the DSi. With this difference, the only way the DS Lite Action Replay will still be valuable is if you keep your DS Lite after purchasing your DSi. If you're not planning to do that, the DS Lite Action Replay will have little value. The DS Lite version was only compatible with a PC. Plus, with two Nintendo DS systems made since the DS Lite, Datel has discontinued the version for that system.

    Additional Software

    • The Action Replay DSi has a couple of added features that its older DS Lite version does not. It comes with 25 mini games on a CD. You also can download homebrew games through your computer. It also includes Media Manager software so users can download musical files and video. The DS Lite version did not have these added features.

    Inputting Codes

    • The Action Replay for DSi has a new feature that allows you to manually input only the codes you want. No longer are you stuck with all the codes that are available for the game. You just punch the codes into the Action Replay virtual keyboard and continue with the game, using only the cheats you want.

    Downloading

    • With the Action Replay for DSi, you can update the device in two ways; the DS Lite Action Replay can only download with a USB cord. You can still use the USB cord to update the DSi Action Replay, but there is another option, as the device also works with an SD memory card that can be plugged directly into the computer, eliminating the need for a wire.
