How to Fix an R4 When It's Stuck on Loading

R4 Cards are memory devices that are used to store music, video and video game data so that they can be played on a Nintendo DS hand-held console, essentially turning the console into a media player. An R4 cartridge will get stuck on the "Loading" screen when attempting to turn on or load a game because the kernel version is out of date. The latest kernel can be downloaded from the R4 website.

R4 cartridge
MicroSD card
USB card reader

Instructions

  Navigate to the R4 website download page (see Resources).

  Find your R4 card on the download page and click on the download link next to it for the latest updates. Save the file to your downloads folder.

  Right-click on the downloaded file and select "Extract All." This will create a new folder containing all the information necessary to update your R4 card.

  Insert the R4 microSD card into the USB card reader and insert the USB reader into a USB port on your computer. Open the R4 folder.

  Drag the downloaded files into the R4 folder. Select "Replace All" and wait for them to be transferred. The R4 should now function correctly.
