How to Defeat Magus in Chrono Trigger for the DSI

The first Magus battle in "Chrono Trigger" for the Nintendo DS -- and for Super Nintendo and PlayStation -- is one of the most difficult fights in the game. The final boss, Lavos, is the only battle that has a substantially higher difficulty. You can defeat Magus by paying extra close attention to what he is doing and basing your strategy around it. The Magus battle marks a substantial turning point in the game because it signifies an increase in the difficult level and a stark change in the story's tone.

  Set up your party to have a variety of skill types. Crono and Frog must be in the party, so that leaves just one open spot. Leave Lucca at home when assembling your party. Robo is the ideal third member, but Marle can also be effective in the fight.

  Level up your characters by fighting enemies in Magus' Castle until your characters are leveled to the mid-20s.

  Attack against using skills that are different from Magus' barrier type. Throughout the battle, Magus will switch his defensive barrier to protect against different types of attacks. The game will give you an alert message as to the type. Attacks that are the same as his barrier type will be ineffective.

  Use double and triple techs for big hits on Magus. By default, Crono and Frog will be able to use the X-cut technique against Magus. The combination attack will do more damage than Crono and Frog are able to alone. If you have Robo in the group, use the extremely effective triple raid attack on Magus, which will hack away large portions of his life. Marle and Robo also have double techniques they can use with Frog to heal the party quickly.

  Keep your HP up on all characters. If Magus deals any damage to you, immediately heal your characters. Use healing items, if necessary. If you're feeling comfortable with the fight and leveled in the high 20s, let your characters' HP dropc as long as it's above 200. Use items immediately to restore any characters that have been killed in combat.

  Use shield sphere and barrier sphere items, if you have them in your inventory. Barrier items are particularly effective against Magus because they give your character improved magic defense. Cast them on Marle first if she's in the group. If not, cast them on Frog.
