Riddles
"American Girl: Kit -- Mystery Challenge" contains many riddles that you need to answer in order to gain knowledge from other characters and advance in a puzzle sequence. The riddles are often easy ones that have answers that make sense to the targeted age-group. An example of a riddle in the game is "What can you hold without your hands or arms? Answer: Breath."
Gather Clues
In each of the six mysteries, you need to gather clues to figure out the answer to the mystery. Collect them by checking out the scene of the crime and talking with all the possible characters. In the first mystery, you need to determine that two set of footprints overlap and that one was left after the other in order to continue with the game. When investigating, leave no stone unturned and inspect everything -- you never know when a clue may turn up.
Dress Up
Throughout the game, Kit must change outfits to fit in with the characters she needs to interrogate. Changing outfits allows the characters to notice Kit and prompts the question-and-answer part of the game. She has a total of six outfits she can choose from, and the right outfit for the right occasion can really make a difference. Test out the different outfits in the various situations to see what happens to the characters' reactions to Kit.
Talk With the Characters
Kit must talk with all the characters in each mystery sequence to find out all the information she needs to solve the mystery. Every person has something to say that could be important. However, some of the characters won't talk unless you gain information from other characters, so you may need to go back and forth between different characters to get all the information you need.
