How to Catch a Shiny in Pokemon

Shiny Pokemon, first introduced in "Pokemon Silver" and "Gold," are mere pallet swaps of their species' regular sprite. These alternate-colored Pokemon are no better or worse than any other of their type, so all that makes them stand out is their rarity. In any given encounter, the chance of a wild Pokemon being Shiny is only one in 8,192 - or 0.0122 percent. If you find one, you'll probably want to catch it just to show off to your friends. Catching them works the same as any other Pokemon.

Instructions

    • 1

Stock up on Pokeballs in advance. Always have plenty with you, as you may run into a Shiny when you least expect it.

    • 2

Teach Hypnosis, Sing or Yawn to one Pokemon on your team. You'll want to keep this Pokemon with you at all times so you can put the Shiny Pokemon to sleep. Putting a Pokemon to sleep raises the capture rate, making them easier to catch.

    • 3

Lower the Shiny Pokemon's health into the red, but take care not to knock it out. Teach one member of your team the move False Swipe, which reduces an enemy Pokemon's health to 1 HP without knocking it out.
