Uses of the PokeRadar in Platinum

The PokeRadar is a key item given in "Pokemon Platinum" after a player has seen all 210 Pokemon native to the Sinnoh region at least once. Professor Oak gives very little explanation for its use when he gives you the PokeRadar. This item helps locate Pokemon in tall grass throughout the world, but it has other uses besides getting into random encounters.
  1. Pokemon Location

    • The main use of the PokeRadar is to find the location of Pokemon in tall grass, one of the areas where players normally have random encounters. This item cannot be used in any other type of area where random encounters occur, such as caves or water. Patches of grass with Pokemon hiding in them shake when the PokeRadar is used. Walking onto the patch of grass that shook automatically starts a fight. You can still have random encounters in areas of the grass that did not shake. In addition, using an item, such as Repel, that prevents random encounters does not prevent fights started by entering a patch of grass that shook when the PokeRadar is used.

    Encounter Identification

    • The animation used to shake the grass gives a rough estimate of what you encounter in that area. Depending on where you are, some species of Pokemon are more prevalent than others. The normal grass shake animation usually indicates the most common type of Pokemon for that area. Harder shaking grass indicates one of the more rare types of Pokemon. In some cases, the grass sparkles rather than shakes. This indicates the location of a shiny Pokemon. A shiny Pokemon is simply an unusually colored Pokemon of a given species; there are no other special qualities to it. Some players value these Pokemon purely for rarity value.

    PokeRadar Only Pokemon

    • There are a total of 33 Pokemon in "Pokemon Platinum" that cannot be encountered without the PokeRadar. There is at least one in almost every area with tall grass. Several recognizable species, such as Togepi, Wobbuffet and Mankey, are among the Pokemon that can only be found with the PokeRadar. These Pokemon appear just like any other random encounter. The only difference is that there is a zero percent chance of finding one in a random encounter without using the PokeRadar.

    Shiny Encounter Rate

    • The PokeRadar has the ability to modify the rate that the player encounters shiny Pokemon. Normally there is a one in 8,192 chance of a shiny Pokemon appearing in a random encounter. The PokeRadar can raise this probability up to one in 200. This is accomplished through a mechanic called chaining. The game has a counter that is used to modify the shiny encounter rate. It increases by one each time you defeat or capture a Pokemon of the same species one after another. These Pokemon must also be found in patches of grass discovered by the PokeRadar and cannot be regular random encounters. Almost every action you take beyond fighting and defeating the same species resets the counter. The maximum value of the counter is 40, which gives the one in 200 chance of finding a shiny Pokemon.
