How to Find Rare Pokemon in the Pokewalker

The Pokewalker is a pedometer that comes with the "Pokemon HeartGold" and "Pokemon SoulSilver" Nintendo DS games. The device allows you to wirelessly transfer a Pokemon from the game to the Pokewalker. As you walk with your Pokemon, the Pokewalker counts your steps and accumulates watts. On the Pokewalker, your Pokemon can battle up to three different wild Pokemon on a specific route, giving you the chance to catch them. The more steps you take with the Pokewalker in a 24-hour period, the more chances you have to meet a rare Pokemon.

Instructions

  1. Transfer a Pokemon to the Pokewalker

    • 1

Place the "Pokemon HeartGold" or "Pokemon SoulSilver" cartridge in the Nintendo DS and turn on the system. Press the "Start" button to run the game.

    • 2

Click the "Connect to Pokewalker" button on the main game screen, instead of on your saved game. Then click the button labeled "Go for a stroll."

    • 3

Select a Pokemon to send to the Pokewalker from the list of those you've obtained in the game.

    • 4

Select a Pokewalker route for that Pokemon to visit from the list of available routes.

    • 5

Hold the Pokewalker so that the red side faces the back of the DS, where the game cartridge is. Press the large button in the middle of the Pokewalker to initiate the wireless connection. The DS will transfer over the selected Pokemon and route information. The Pokewalker will beep to indicate when the transfer finishes.

    • 6

Press the "B" button on the DS to return to the main screen of "Pokemon HeartGold" or "Pokemon SoulSilver." If you don't plan on playing your game right now, you can turn off the DS.

Walk With Your Pokemon and Pokewalker

    • 7

Look at the Pokewalker screen. A black-and-white animated image of the Pokemon you transferred will appear, as well as some small background graphics that indicate your chosen route.

    • 8

Walk around with the Pokewalker attached to your belt or waistband.

    • 9

Read the number of steps in the lower right. Rare Pokemon, if any exist on the route you've chosen, appear after you've walked at least 5,000 steps. Very rare Pokemon appear only after 10,000 steps.

    • 10

Press the middle button after you've walked 5,000 or more steps for a chance to meet a rare Pokemon.

    • 11

Press the left button twice to highlight the "PokeRadar" tool. Press the middle button to activate it. Using the PokeRadar to search for a Pokemon costs 10 watts each time.

    • 12

Press the left button to attack the wild Pokemon when one appears, or the right button to evade the wild Pokemon's attacks. Four dashes above the wild Pokemon indicate its health. Attack or evade until the dashes drop to only one.

    • 13

Press the middle button to throw a Poke Ball to catch the wild Pokemon. A series of beeps and an animation of stars around the Poke Ball confirm that you caught the wild Pokemon.
