How to Get Every Legendary on Diamond & Pearl

In "Pokemon Diamond" and "Pearl," you can catch eight different legendary Pokemon and have the chance to see a ninth to add to your Pokedex. With such a large number of legendaries, catching them all requires hard work and patience. If you want them on your team, though, or just want to bragging rights to say you caught them, it pays off.

Instructions

  1. Before the National Pokedex

    • 1

Get a good, solid team of Pokemon together at levels similar to the legendary you're going after. Teach one Pokemon False Swipe, which is guaranteed to lower the opponent to one HP but not knock them out. Give another Pokemon Hypnosis or Yawn, which causes the sleep status effect.

    • 2

Buy a large number of Pokeballs, particularly Dusk Balls, which have a 3x capture rate in caves and at night. Ultra Balls, with their 2x capture rate on all Pokemon, also come in handy. Pick others based on your personal preference, and consider saving the Master Ball for a runner such as Mesprit or Cresselia.

    • 3

Save your game before battling any legendary Pokemon, in case you run out of Pokeballs or accidentally knock them out. With a saved game, you will be able to retry the battle as many times as you need by simply soft-resetting your Nintendo DS console.

    • 4

Head to the Spear Pillar atop Mount Coronet during the course of normal game-play to get your version's legendary mascot. "Pokemon Pearl" players will find the Water/Dragon-type Palkia, while "Pokemon Diamond" players instead battle the Steel/Dragon-type Dialga. The other version's legendary will be unobtainable except by trading.

    • 5

Revisit the three major lakes to find the Sinnoh region's legendary Psychic-type trio. Visit the cave in the middle of Lake Acuity to find and catch Uxie, and the cave at Lake Valor for Azelf. Encounter Mesprit at Lake Verity, which will trigger it to begin wandering the map. Mesprit will appear randomly in tall grass and can be difficult to track down and catch.

    Post-National Pokedex

    • 6

Transfer Regice, Regirock and Registeel from an older "Pokemon" title, or trade with a friend to get them. Put them in your party before heading to the Snowpoint Temple, located in Snowpoint City. Descend to the bottom of Snowpoint Temple to encounter Regigigas.

    • 7

Go to Stark Mountain with Buck to watch a short scene. Head back to the Survival Area and speak with Buck again. Revisit Stark Mountain, ascending all the way to the top, to encounter and hopefully capture Heatran.

    • 8

Head to Route 214 and take the newly appeared Spring Path, which leads to Sendoff Spring. Enter Turnback Cave and try to solve the randomized maze, making sure not to pass through any doors you have used before. Rooms are symmetrical, with multiple exits that have patterns above them; the door to take will have a pattern that does not match the door you entered through. Eventually you will encounter the Ghost/Dragon-type Giratina.

    • 9

Fly to Canalave City and talk to the sailor in the house next to the boat. Talk to the boy who is trapped in a nightmare, then get the sailor to take you to Fullmoon Isle. Follow the path and talk to Cresselia, which will fly away, leaving behind the item Lunar Wing, which can be used to cure the boy back in Canalave City. The Psychc-type Cresselia will now wander the map randomly and may be difficult to track down, much like Mesprit.
