DS Games for Girls With No Reading

The Nintendo DS is a handheld, duel-screen gaming system designed for kids of all ages. Preschoolers love the DS because it is small and uncomplicated to use. The problem with many games, however, is that there is a lot of reading required to enjoy the game. Luckily, there are several games targeted at pre-readers that require little or no reading to enjoy the games, and some of these games are targeted specifically at girls.

Nintendogs
- Nintendogs is a game where the player cares for a dog and teaches it tricks. After the dog learns tricks, the dog and owner can compete in competitions together, such as Frisbee throwing, agility and obedience trials. The game has some words, but it is possible to play the game comprehensively without reading any of the words. All of the main activities in the game require no reading. The more trials the dog wins, the more money the player earns to spend on additional dogs, toys and food, and fixing up the doghouse.
Educational Games
- Many preschool educational games do not have reading elements in order to encourage pre-readers to play. Some of the games even help preschoolers improve letter recognition and sounds or other preschool activities. Many game brands produce educational games, including Dora the Explorer, Littlest Petshop, Disney, Barbie and My Little Pony. Freddie the Fish also has some educational games for preschoolers that do not require any reading skills. Check the packaging for the recommended ages for the game. Anything that is listed as a preschool game should have little reading.
Mama Games
- The Mama games are non-educational games that have hardly any reading required to play. In these games, girls can pretend to make food or gardens. The games are picture based, and the girls can actually "prepare" the dish or make their own gardens. The game uses a grading system based on the bronze, silver and gold system. If the girl gets a gold award, then she is "just as good as Mama." Preschool girls love pretend and playing at being adults, so these games are ideal for pre-reading girls.
Smart Girls
- The Smart Girls series is a series of DS video games for girls that help girls learn and become smarter. The Smart Girls games are targeted just to girls. There is also a companion series called Smart Kids, which are targeted to boys and girls. Smart Girls games include interactive stories, read-along games, mini games and musical selections. There is even an interactive dollhouse that preschool girls will love.
