How to Get a Water Type Pokemon Without Using the Super Rod

As of May 2011, "Pokemon White" and "Pokemon Black" are the latest versions of the "Pokemon" series to hit the Nintendo DS and 3DS. In previous "Pokemon" games, the various fishing rods you received throughout them allowed you to catch Water-Type Pokemon while on land. "Pokemon Black" and "Pokemon White" only feature one fishing pole, the Super Rod, which you don't get until after completing the game's main story. As in previous games, you can also encounter wild Water-Type Pokemon by using the HM move, Surf. While surfing, you'll randomly run into Pokemon, just like you do when running through tall grass.

Instructions

    • 1

Beat the game's sixth gym, Mistralton City Gym. Leave Mistralton City via Route 7 and exit Route 7 from the northeast, heading for Twist Mountain. Upon entering Twist Mountain, you'll see your rival, Cheren. Defeat Cheren to get HM03, Surf.

    • 2

Open your bag to the TM and HM screen and select "Surf." Opt to teach the move to a Pokemon and choose a Pokemon with "ABLE!" under its name. If none of your current Pokemon are able to learn Surf, use the PC in any PokeCenter to swap Pokemon and find one capable of learning the move.

    • 3

Navigate to any area of the Unova map with water. Face the water and press "A." Select "Yes" when asked if you want to use Surf.

    • 4

Surf back and forth until you encounter a wild Water-Type Pokemon. After lowering its HP, catch it as you would any other Pokemon.
