The "Harvest Moon" franchise is a series of farm simulation games that has been around since 1996. In the game, players must clear land, grow crops and raise livestock, while still finding time to make friends with townspeople and start a family. Livestock are taken care of through feeding, grooming and talking. Large animals are talked to the same as people, by approaching them and pressing "A." This doesn't work with small animals, because the "A" button will cause the character to pick up the animal. Fortunately, the game designers have added an item, the stethoscope, to act as a device for talking.

Purchase the brush from the bazaar. This will make the stethoscope available the next time you visit, as long as it has been a day or more since the last visit.

Purchase the stethoscope from the bazaar.

Approach the animal and stop directly beside it.

Press "X" to open the inventory screen. Select the stethoscope, press "A" and choose "Equip" from the menu.

Face the animal and press "A." A dialogue box will appear informing you of the animal's status.
