How Do You Catch Mesprit Without the Master Ball in Pokemon Platinum?

Mesprit is one of the three roaming Psychic legendary Pokemon available for you to catch in "Pokemon Platinum." Unlike the other legendary Pokemon that you can always find in the same spot, Mesprit and the other roaming Pokemon do not have a set location. You encounter them by chance, and then if you do not use a Masterball to catch them immediately, they will run away and you will have to find them again. Thankfully, you can prevent them from running away by using the "Mean Look" attack, which prevents any Pokemon from escaping a battle.

Instructions

    • 1

Place any Pokemon that knows "Mean Look" at the first position in your party. Make sure this Pokemon is not above level 50. Equip a "Quick Claw" item to ensure that your Pokemon will attack first.

    • 2

Check your map to see Mesprit's location if you have already encountered it. If not, travel to Lake Verity to encounter it.

    • 3

Go to the area and use roam around until you are attacked by Mesprit. Immediately use "Mean Look" to prevent Mesprit from running away.

    • 4

Use Dark or Bug type Pokemon to weaken Mesprit. As Dark and Bug type Pokemon are resistant to Psychic type attacks, Mesprit will not be able to do too much damage to them. Once Mesprit's health drops into the red area, put it to sleep or paralyze it, if you have any moves that inflict those status affects. If not, you can still catch Mesprit, but it will be slightly harder.

    • 5

Use any Pokeballs you have. As Mesprit has a capture rate of 3, it will take a very long time to capture it, even if you have weakened it and it is paralyzed or asleep. Consider using Dusk Balls if it is night time or Timer Balls if the battle has been going on for ten turns or longer. Ultra Balls are also helpful. Once any Pokeball has shaken three times and makes a clicking sound, Mesprit will be caught.
