How to Make a Pokemon Team

When playing a Pokemon video game, building a solid team of six Pokemon for battle is key to success. 17 Pokemon types exist, each with different advantages over one another. A good Pokemon team incorporates as many different types as possible to prepare for a variety of opponents. A Fire-type Pokemon, for example is weak against a Water-type, but a Water-type Pokemon is weak against a Grass-type, and a Fire-type has advantage over Grass-type. Some Pokemon have dual types, such as Water and Flying, so you receive the benefits of both those types in one Pokemon.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your starter Pokemon from the three the professor offers you at the start of the game. Every game starts with a choice of a Water-type, Grass-type or Fire-type.

    • 2

Build your team around the starter Pokemon. If you picked a Grass-type for example, you don't need another Grass-type on your team so focus on acquiring types other than that one.

    • 3

Walk in the tall grass after you leave the professor's house and start your journey. You'll encounter many wild Pokemon in the grassy areas.

    • 4

Battle the wild Pokemon you meet to give your team experience points that make them stronger.

    • 5

Throw Pokeballs to catch wild Pokemon you want to add to your team. The first few wild Pokemon you usually meet are Normal-, Flying- or Bug-type Pokemon. They make excellent additions to your team. When you have the full team of six Pokemon with you, any additional ones you catch transfer to a storage area accessible from the computer in the Pokemon Centers you find in every town.

    • 6

Use the computer in any Pokemon Center to swap Pokemon traveling with you for ones in storage if you want to change your team lineup. Most players usually keep their starter with them at all times, but rotate other Pokemon types onto the team so that many Pokemon gain experience points, not just a handful.

    • 7

Look at the battle moves your Pokemon know. Examine each move's strength and type. Like Pokemon, moves fall into one the same 17 types. Some Pokemon of one type can learn moves of another type, which is an advantage in battle. Place the Pokemon with the strongest moves in your team.

    • 8

Review what a particular Pokemon move does. Some moves aren't don't damage the opponent, but cause negative effects to it, like putting an opponent to sleep or paralyzing it. A Pokemon with a move that heals other Pokemon on its team during battle or one that protects its team from damage could also help you to victory.

    • 9

Examine each Pokemon's stats. They have stats for attack, defense and speed. Higher stats indicate a stronger Pokemon. Try to keep your team filled with strong Pokemon while keeping the types varied.
