How to Reach and Obtain Lugia in Pokemon SoulSilver Version

Since Lugia is on the cover of "Pokemon SoulSilver," you may be wondering just where in the game to find the legendary Pokemon. First introduced in the second generation of games, Lugia is a Psychic-/Flying-type Pokemon with excellent stats in Defense, Special Defense and speed. Finding Lugia requires you to have already met a variety of conditions. Capturing Lugia can be even more challenging still, but is well worth the effort. Catching Lugia will put you one step closer to catching all the Pokemon --- and Lugia can be incredibly useful on a team used to battle against your friends.

Instructions

  Defeat Team Rocket at Slowpoke Well, in Mahogany Town, at Ecruteak Theater and at the Goldenrod City Radio Tower during the course of regular gameplay. After beating Team Rocket in Goldenrod, you will obtain the Silver Wing.

  Beat all eight gym leaders to get their gym badges.

  Return to Ecrutreak City, and go to the theater to battle the Kimono Girls.

  Walk or fly to Olivine City after you have defeated the Kimono Girls.

  Pick the Pokemon you will bring with you to capture Lugia. You will need a Pokemon with Surf and Whirlpool to reach Lugia. To capture the legendary Pokemon, you will want to bring along a Pokemon that can inflict the Sleep status effect. (Drowzee or Hypno are readily obtainable Pokemon that learn Hypnosis, but you may use any Pokemon you like.) You will also need a Pokemon that knows Flash.

  Stock up on Poke Balls, particularly Dusk Balls. Dusk Balls are three times more effective than regular Poke Balls when used in caves or at night. Since Lugia lives in a cave, the improved capture rate is in effect.

  Surf south from Olivine City, across Routes 40 and 41 until you reach the Whirl Islands. Enter the upper right cave, and use Flash to light up the cave to see where you are going. After you have used Flash, head northeast. Go down the ladder in the top right corner, then head south and west until you find another ladder to climb down. After this, head south. Talk to the trainer at the top of the ramp, and then descend as far as you can.

  Enter the cave at the bottom, and head north. Watch a short scene with the Kimono Girls.

  Save before facing Lugia, in case you accidentally beat it or run out of Poke Balls, or in case it knocks out all your Pokemon.

  Talk to Lugia to challenge it to a battle. Putting Lugia to sleep should be your first priority, as such a status will make it easier to capture. Next, whittle its health down as low as possible until only a sliver remains.

  Throw Poke Balls until you catch Lugia. Legendary Pokemon are notoriously difficult to catch, so this may require several tries. If you run out of Poke Balls, simply restart and try again.
