The Safari Zones in Pokemon SoulSilver and HeartGold

The Safari Zone in "Pokemon SoulSilver" and "HeartGold" is a wild Pokemon nature preserve near Cianwood City. After you've helped Jasmine at the Olivine City lighthouse, Baoba, the Safari Zone owner, announces the Safari Zone is open. Enter the cave north of the Cianwood City Gym to get to Routes 47 and 48 that lead to the Safari Zone. After you've visited the Safari Zone once, you can fly there and bypass the cave route.
  1. Safari Zone Layout

    • The Safari Zone consists of 12 terrain zones, six of which are available each time you enter the preserve. The six zones sit connected in a 3 by 2 grid, but the terrain types change each time you play. Initially, you have access to 10 zones: Plains, Swamp, Meadow, Wetland, Peak, Forest. Marshland, Savanna, Wasteland and Mountain. Desert and Rocky Beach become available later on.

    Catching Pokemon

    • To enter the Safari Zone, you must pay $500 for 30 Safari balls. These are the only balls you can use to catch the Pokemon. When you run out of balls, your time in the Safari Zone expires. You also carry bait and mud with you. As you walk through the six different terrain zones, you will bump into wild Pokemon, and battle begins. You have three move choices: toss a Safari ball, toss bait or toss mud. With the ball, the Pokemon either stays inside or doesn't. Pokemon that break free of the ball usually flee. Tossing bait makes the Pokemon less likely to run away but more likely to break free of the ball you throw next. Tossing mud makes it easier to get the Pokemon to stay in the ball but angers the Pokemon so it's more likely to flee before you can throw a ball.

    Baoba's Tests

    • When you first visit the Safari Zone, Baoba asks you to find him a Geodude in the Peak area. After you do this, you unlock two new zones, Desert and Rocky Beach. Then Baoba asks you to find him a Sandshrew in the desert. After you show Baoba a Sandshrew, he proclaims you the new Safari Zone owner. He says he wants to go off to do his own thing for a while, but he'll call you when he has new ideas for the Safari Zone. Although you are the Safari Owner after the second test, Baoba asks that you still pay the $500 entrance fee. Later on Baoba phones you about his new idea called Object Arrangement that allows you to place certain objects, such as rocks, in the Safari Zone areas to attract very rare Pokemon.

    Area Customizer

    • Baoba's second test asks you to find a Sandshrew. Sandshrews are only found in the Desert zone, which may not be one of the six random zones you get when you enter the Safari Zone, so Baoba will tell you about a special computer called the Area Customizer. This tool allows you to set which six zones appear when you enter the Safari Zone rather than accepting randomly generated choices. To use the Area Customizer, press the "A" button while standing next to the computer in the upper-right corner of the Safari Zone building. Highlight one of the six zones you want to replace then choose the "Switch" command to swap in another terrain zone that isn't currently in the layout.
