The Nintendo Game Boy video game "Pokemon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition" is an enhanced version of the original "Pokemon Red" and "Blue" games. You always start the "Special Pikachu Edition" game with Pikachu as your companion, unlike in the original titles, where you could choose one of three starter Pokemon -- one of which was Squirtle, a powerful Water-type Pokemon that evolves into Blastoise. However, you can still get a Squirtle for free in "Pokemon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition," after you've earned the Thunder Badge.

Go to Vermillion City, in the South-East of the Kanto region.

Defeat the Vermillion City Pokemon Gym Leader, Lt.Surge. All of his Pokemon are Electric-types, which are weak against Ground and Rock-types.

Get the Thunder Badge from Lt. Surge.

Go to the Vermillion City Pokemon Mart.

Talk to the girl named Jenny outside the Pokemon Mart, and she will give you a Squirtle.
