How to EV Train in Pokemon Diamond

"Effort Value" (EV) training is a way to increase specific stats of Pokemon in the Nintendo DS role playing game, "Pokemon Diamond." Pokemon receive EV points when they win a battle and get experience. Each victory gives a Pokemon one to three EV points and it takes four EV points for a stat to increase. It is important to fight against the proper Pokemon, as only 255 EV points can be allocated per stat and the maximum number of EV points per Pokemon is 510.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide which Pokemon you want to EV train, and put them at the head of your party. To EV train two Pokemon at the same time in the same stats, give the "Experience Share" item to the second Pokemon. You can get the Experience Share item in Eterna City from Professor Rowan's assistant.

    • 2

Decide on which stat you want to focus for the Pokemon you are going to EV train. This will dictate which areas you have to go to in order to train, and what wild Pokemon you need to battle. Focus on stats that a Pokemon is already good in to get the best results.

    • 3

Travel to a location where you will find the type of Pokemon you want to EV train against. It doesn't matter what level the opponents are, as the amount of EV points you get from them are the same. An easy way to get a lot of EV points is to fight against Pokemon at a much lower level than yourself and defeat them quickly to get the points.

    • 4

Use an EV table like the one on Psypokes to see which Pokemon you have to battle in order to get the EV points you want to achieve. For example, if you want to train your Pokemon's Special Attack stats, a Gengar would be the best opponent while for EV training in Attack you should seek out Machamps. If you run into a wild Pokemon that does not give out the EV points you want, flee from the battle or switch to another Pokemon in your party who can benefit from that specific type of EV points.
