How to Use PokeWalker in SoulSilver

The PokeWalker is a pedometer device that encourages players of "Pokemon SoulSilver" and "HeartGold" to get out and exercise. You can transfer Pokemon from their Nintendo DS to the PokeWalker device using built-in infrared ports. By taking the Pokemon for walks down virtual routes, you can catch new Pokemon, find items and earn experience points. You also can use the PokeWalker to connect with other players' PokeWalkers to receive free items. The PokeWalker comes with all "SoulSilver" and "HeartGold" games

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the plastic tab out from the back of the PokeWalker. This allows the battery to make contact with the terminal, activating the device.

    • 2

Start "SoulSilver" on the DS system.

    • 3

Select "Connect to PokeWalker" from the main menu, then select "Go for a stroll." This option allows you to place one of your Pokemon into the PokeWalker.

    • 4

Place the infrared port on the PokeWalker about 2 inches from the infrared port on the game card.

    • 5

Select "Connect" from the PokeWalker screen, then press the round button. This will begin communication between the two devices, and your Pokemon will be transferred to the PokeWalker.

    • 6

Choose from one of the routes listed on the PokeWalker screen. At first you can choose from only three routes, but later you can unlock more routes.

    • 7

Walk around the the Pokewalker in your pants pocket or attached to your belt. The built-in pedometer counts your steps. For every 20 steps you take, you gain one "watt" of power. After you have saved up enough watts, you can access other features of the PokeWalker. The Pokemon in your PokeWalker also gains experience and happiness points while you walk.

Select the "PokeRadar" option from the main screen to search for wild Pokemon. Each use of this feature costs 10 watts. Four patches of grass will appear on the screen, and an exclamation point will appear above the patch containing a wild Pokemon. Select the patch of grass to enter combat. Your combat options are "Attack," "Catch" and "Evade." The rules are similar to the regular game rules. You must knock a Pokemon's health down before you can capture it. Your PokeWalker can hold two wild Pokemon that can be returned to your DS system.

    • 9

Select the "PokeDowse" option to search for hidden items. Each use costs 3 watts and gives you two searches. You will see six patches of grass on the display after you dowse. You select one of the patches, and if you pick the wrong one the PokeWalker will give you a hint about how far off your are. You can keep up to three items found by dowsing.

Connect your PokeWalker to a friend's PokeWalker by pointing them at each other. You both get a free item, and your friend's team will be added to the Viridian City Trainer House, where you can do battle with them in the main game. You can get only one free item per friend per day, and your PokeWalker will hold only 10 items at a time.

    • 11

Select the "Trainer Card" option from the menu to see your name, the route you are on and your walking statistics.
