DS Stylus Games

When using the Nintendo DS stylus, gamers get to interact with their games via a touch screen. Drag the stylus across the system's bottom screen to draw shapes, tap the screen to progress, and draw lines to guide characters. You may be seeking DS stylus games -- games that are heavy on stylus use -- because they're different from the traditional directional pad and button games seen in previous handheld gaming systems.
  1. "The Legend of Zelda: Phatom Hourglass"

    • The 2007 DS game "The Legend of Zelda: Phatom Hourglass" earned a high score -- 9.0/10 -- at IGN when it first came out. IGN's Mark Bozon explains that the game is stylus-only, a rarity among DS games. Requiring use of the stylus, though, encourages the player to interact with the game's world of Hyrule directly. You use the stylus to guide the game's hero, Link, by moving the location of his fairy companion, Ciela. You also use the stylus to slash through or tap enemies, and to make Link spin attack by drawing a circle around him.

"Professor Layton and the Curious Village"

    • The first game in the "Professor Layton" DS game series, 2008's "Professor Layton and the Curious Village," requires frequent stylus use. In the game, you play as Professor Layton, a British archaeologist who solves mysteries as he happens upon them. IGN's Craig Harris gave the game an 8.0/10 and applauded the game's puzzle-solving angle mixed with a point-and-click adventure. You use your stylus in most of the game's puzzles; for example, you slide tiles around in the fewest possible moves and draw shapes to complete a pattern.

    "Kirby Canvas Curse"

    • "Kirby Canvas Curse," a 2005 release, is one of the earliest stylus-only games released for the Nintendo DS, which originally launched in 2004. Scoring 9.0/10 according to IGN's Craig Harris, "Kirby Canvas Curse" follows the adventures of Kirby, Nintendo's original inhaling pink, fluffy character. When playing this side-scrolling platformer adventure, you guide Kirby as he aims to break a curse that turned him into a ball. With your stylus, you draw a path for Kirby to follow, and he twists and turns according to your stylus stroke. To stop him when he's rolling, you quickly draw a vertical line.

    "Crafting Mama"

    • The 2010 release "Crafting Mama" was the fifth DS game in the "Mama" series; previous games focused on cooking and gardening. As Mama, a Japanese homemaker, you use your stylus to imitate crafting, such as folding paper into a paper airplane and sewing an apron. For another example, to make a mug, you use your stylus to operate a pottery wheel, glue on a mug handle and serve tea. GameSpot rates the game an 8.6/10.
