Nintendo DS Lite
The Nintendo DS Lite is named for its thin shape and light weight. The second of all the Nintendo DS devices, it is 3 inches tall, 5.2 inches wide and .85 inches thick. Like all of the devices, its bottom screen is a touch screen you can control with the includes stylus and its top screen displays the game you are playing. Its battery lasts between 15 and 19 hours, offers a sleep mode and charges in only three hours. The device ships with several language options, including English, Japanese, Spanish, French, German and Italian. Other features include alarm clock, time and date, picture chat and online connectivity. As of April 2011, the device is available in red, black and light pink and costs $129.99.
Nintendo DSi
With similar features and specs to the Nintendo DS Lite, the DSi is slightly shorter and lighter its predecessor but it is also a bit wider. The device is faster than the DS Lite because it has 16 MB RAM, 256 MB of internal memory and a faster CPU. Unlike its predecessor, the DSi offers a built-in camera that allows you to video chat. New features include a sound application that allows you to edit sound and an animation program that allows you to create and upload animations you have drawn with the stylus. Both of the LCD screens are 256-by-192 pixels and can display 260,000 different colors. The device is available in black, bright pink and bright blue and retails for $149.99.
DSi XL
Similar to the Nintendo DSi, the DSi XL features extra large 4.2-inch screens. The stylus is larger than the normal DS stylus and looks more like a pen. The device comes pre-installed with "Brain Age Express: Math, Brain Age," "Express: Arts &Letters" and "Photo Clock." The Nintendo DSi XL is available in maroon, black and blue and retails for $169.99. It is larger and heavier than all of its predecessors.
3DS
The Nintendo 3DS features a 3D screen that provides a realistic 3D experience without the use of special glasses. A depth-slider allows you to alter the depth of the game. If desired, you can turn 3D off completely and play any game in traditional 2D. The device contains a motion sensor and gyro sensor that allows you to twist and turn your DS for navigation in certain games. This feature can be compared to the motion controls of the Nintendo Wiimote. The 3DS ships with a 2GB memory card, offers an adjustable stylus and includes a circle pad for analog navigation. The device is available in aqua blue and black and retails for $249.99.
