How to Make and Sew Case Wallets for the Nintendo DSI

Kids today carry their Nintendo DSI with them everywhere -- the mall, restaurants, flights, road trips and seemingly everywhere in between. Many parents purchase ready-made cases to protect the DSI from getting broken or damaged, but if you want a one-of-a-kind accessory that reflects your child's personal style, consider sewing a case for the Nintendo DSI. The options are endless. You can choose fabric depicting a favorite sports team, cartoon character and more.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 yard of 44/45 inch fabric
  • 1 spool of coordinating thread
  • ½ yard of cotton batting
  • 10 inch by 10 inch piece of paper-backed double-sided fusible web
  • 1 package of ½ inch double-fold bias tape
  • 6 ½ inch piece of sew-on Velcro
  • Fabric marker or chalk
  • Sewing machine

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the the circumference of the DSI while it is closed, from the front latch to the hinges and back around to the latch and add 2 ½ inches. Then, measure its width and add 1 ½ inches.

    • 2

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, right sides together and selvages aligned.

    • 3

Use a fabric marker or chalk to draw a rectangle, which will serve as the DSI case, directly on the back of the fabric. Mark the width from the fold toward the edges. Cut two of these rectangles.

    • 4

Use a fabric marker or chalk to draw a 7-inch line from the fold out to the right and then an 8-inch vertical line. This piece will serve as a flap to close the case. Cut two.

    • 5

Fold the cotton batting in half lengthwise. Cut one rectangle to the same dimensions as the fabric for the DSI case.

    • 6

To assemble the flap, center and stitch the hook side of the Velcro onto the right side of the flap piece, 1 inch from the bottom edge.

    • 7

With right sides together, pin the flap pieces with raw edges aligned, and stitch a ½ seam around three sides, leaving the top edge open. Clip the corners, turn the flap right side out, and press.

    • 8

Lay the two fabric rectangles for the DSI case with wrong sides together and a layer of batting between them. Pin through all three layers and use a disappearing fabric marker to mark with fabric with quilting lines. Diagonal lines about 2 inches apart work well.

    • 9

Use your sewing machine to quilt the layers together following the lines.

    • 10

Decide which side will be the outside of the case and fold the quilted material in half by bringing the bottom up to the top, wrong sides together, matching raw edges. Measure 4 inches from the top edge, center the loop Velcro and stitch it in place.

    • 11

Fold the quilted material in half again, this time with right sides together. Pin and stitch both sides of the rectangle using a half-inch seam. Leave the top open.

    • 12

Trim the seam allowances and bind them with the purchased bias tape, fully encasing the seam. Turn the sleeve right side out.

    • 13

With right sides together and raw edges aligned, pin back the flap to the center of the sleeve. Baste in place.

    • 14

Use double fold bias tape to finish the raw edges of the top of the sleeve.
