What Spells Will Put You to Sleep in Pokemon Pearl?

The sleep status ailment can be the deciding factor between victory and defeat for a Pokemon trainer in "Pokemon Pearl" for the Nintendo DS. Hundreds of Pokemon can learn moves that cause sleep, but you have to do some research to learn how these moves work and their effectiveness in certain situations. There is nothing more satisfying that beating up an opponent that is snoozing through a Pokemon battle.
  1. Grass Type Sleep Moves

    • Grass type Pokemon such as Tangela, Roselia and Amoongus are sleep-inducing specialists. Three grass type moves cause enemy Pokemon to fall asleep. "Spore" shoots mushroom spores into the air that always force the opponent into dreamland. "Sleep Powder" is a move that is widely available to plant Pokemon, but it only hits its mark 75 percent of the time. The least effective grass type move that causes the sleep status is "GrassWhistle." "GrassWhistle" only lures Pokemon to sleep with its calming melody a mere 55 percent of the time.

    Normal Type Sleep Moves

    • Normal type moves that cause sleep are often learned by a large range of Pokemon species. "Relic Song" is a special attack exclusive to Meloetta that damages its foe and forces it to fall asleep. "Lovely Kiss" is exclusive to Jynx. It forces a kiss onto the enemy that puts it to sleep 75 percent of the time. "Secret Power" is a damage-causing move that only causes the sleep status if the Pokemon battle is taking place in tall grass. Although available to many Pokemon including Chatot, Delcatty and Kricketune, "Sing"'s soothing effects only make the enemy nap 55 percent of the time. "Yawn" is a tricky move, where the user yawns, making its foe drowsy. The next turn, the drowsy Pokemon falls asleep.

    Psychic and Dark Sleep Moves

    • Some strange sleep-causing Pokemon moves originate from psychic and dark type move sets. "Hypnosis" uses mental suggestion to make its enemy doze off, but it only works 60 percent of the time. "Dark Void" is known exclusively to Darkrai. Darkrai pulls its rival into another dimension where it slumbers 80 percent of the time "Dark Void" is used. "Rest" is a self-preservation move that restores all of the user's heath, but puts it to sleep for two turns.

    Sleep Strategies

    • Crafty Pokemon trainers can effectively deal with the sleep status, making this sleepy disability into a potential advantage. Using an awakening item or blue flute on a sleeping Pokemon will instantly pull it from slumber. A Pokemon holding a Chesto Berry will instantly consume the berry and wake up if it is made to sleep. Pokemon that have the "Vital Spirit" or "Insomnia" abilities are unaffected by sleep. Hypno, Delibird and Ariados can have these abilities.
