What Powers Does Mesprit Have on Pokemon?

Mesprit, the Emotion Pokemon, is one of three legendary psychic-type Pokemon you meet at the lakes in the "Pokemon Diamond," "Pokemon Pearl," and "Pokemon Platinum" games. Mesprit is a difficult Pokemon to capture because it roams rather than staying in one location. If you are lucky enough to keep Mesprit stationary for a battle, you must choose a strong Pokemon from your team that can withstand Mesprit's powerful psychi- and normal-type moves or you will lose.
  1. Level-up and Learned Moves

    • At Level 1 Mesprit knows "Rest," which allows it to restore its strength while sleeping for two turns. In "Pokemon Platinum," Mesprit also knows "Confusion" at Level 1. This move has a 50-power strike and 100 percent accuracy with a 10 percent chance of leaving the opponent confused. As Mesprit gains more experience and levels up, it learns "Imprison," which prevents a foe from using any move that Mesprit also knows, "Protect," which blocks an opponent's attack, but has a high chance of failing if used repeatedly, and "Lucky Chant, which prevents the opponent from landing critical hits for five turns. In "Pokmeon Platinum" Mesprit can also learn "Swift" at Level 21, a move with 60 power that never misses.

    High Level Moves

    • At levels above 35, Mesprit learns moves with more power. "Future Sight" takes two turns to work, but hits the targeted Pokmeon with a 80-power attack, even if the Pokemon retreats. "Charm" weakens an opponent's attack. "Extrasensory" hits with 80 power and 100-percent accuracy. "Copycat" allows Mesprit to mimic the last move used in battle even if it doesn't know that move. "Natural Gift" has 100 percent accuracy and the attack strength varies based on the berry Mesprit holds. The berries that give the move an 80-power punch include Watmel, Durin, Belue, Liechi, Ganlon and Apicot.

    TM, HM and Taught Moves

    • In addition to level-up moves, a trainer can teach Mesprit certain TM and HM moves the trainer purchases or receives from others in the game. A Pokmeon's type affects what TM or HM it can learn. Mesprit cannot learn any HM moves, but because it is a psychic-type Pokmeon, it can learn powerful psychic-type TMs such as TM85 "Dream Eater," which has 100 power and 100 percent accuracy, TM 29 "Psychic," which has 90 power and 100 percent accuracy, and TM16 "Light Screen," a defensive move that reduces damage to your entire Pokmeon team for five turns. In addition to psychic-type TM moves, Mesprit can learn normal-type TM moves such TM68 "Giga Impact," which has 150 power and 90 percent accuracy, and TM42 "Facade," which has 70 power and 100 percent accuracy. In "Pokemon Platinum," the Move Tutor in Snowpoint City will teach Mesprit strong electric-, fire- and ice-type moves such as "Thunder Punch," "Fire Punch" and "Ice Punch" in exchange for a colored shard.

    Capturing Mesprit

    • A Level 50 Mesprit appears at Lake Verity after you've visited Spear Pillar or the DIstortion World, but the Pokemon flees immediately. You must pursue Mesprit through the game using the "Marking Map" Poketch application. which shows the Pokemon's location. When you spot Mesprit on the map, walk to that location. If you fly, Mesprit teleports away before you get there. To keep Mesprit from fleeing battle, place a Pokemon with the move "Mean Look" or "Block" first in your party, or choose a Pokemon with the ability "Arena Trap" or "Shadow Tag" to head your party. In "Pokemon Platinum" the Level 50, Mesprit knows the moves "Swift," "Lucky Chant," "Future Sight" and "Charm." Mesprit also has the ability "Levitate," so ground-type moves do not affect it.
