How to Get a Forretress in Pokémon HeartGold

In "Pokémon HeartGold," there are some Pokémon you cannot catch in the wild; instead, you must evolve them from their pre-evolutionary forms. Forretress is one of these Pokémon; to obtain this Bug and Steel-type Pokémon, you must catch and evolve the Bug-type Pokémon, Pineco. Although Pineco and Forretress share a common weakness to Fire-type Pokémon, the evolved Forretress gains a resistance to 10 additional types of Pokémon, thanks to the strong defensive capabilities that come with being a Steel-type Pokémon.

Instructions

  Speak to the man who is headbutting a tree in the main section of the Ilex Forest. He will offer to teach one of your Pokémon the Headbutt move. If you do not have a Pokémon that can learn the move, you can return with different types of Pokémon in your party and speak to him again to learn Headbutt.

  Approach a tree in the Ilex Forest and press "Start". Select "Pokémon" on the menu, choose the Pokémon that knows Headbutt and press "A" to have the Pokémon headbutt the tree.

  Battle the Pokémon that falls out of the tree. If the Pokémon is not a Pineco or if no Pokémon falls out, choose another tree in the forest to headbutt. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you encounter a Pineco.

  Battle the Pineco to lower its hit points and throw a PokéBall to catch it.

  Train your Pineco by battling wild Pokémon and other trainers in order for it to level up. Once it reaches level 31, it will evolve into Forretress.
