Consoles
The DSi Shop can only be accessed by Nintendo DSi and DSi XL consoles. Earlier DS models and the 3DS console cannot connect to the DSi Shop or use the downloads from it.
Downloads
Application and game downloads for the DSi are called DSiWare. These games are often less involved, and thus less expensive, than cartridge games. These downloads include puzzle and card games, additional content for cartridge games and applications like calendars and diaries.
Point Values
One hundred DSi Points equal $1. You can purchase points from the DSi Shop in increments of 1,000, 2,000 or 3,000. Nintendo Points cards, which can be used with either the DSi or the Wii, range from 500 points to 5,000 points. Nintendo Points cards can be purchased at most retailers that sell video games.
Adding DSi Points
The DSi Shop icon appears in the applications list on the DSi's main menu. Launch the shop and choose "Start Shopping," then "Add DSi Points." If you have a prepaid card, choose "Redeem Nintendo Points Card." The back of the card has a silver strip that must be scratched off with a coin or fingernail. An activation code is beneath the strip. Enter this code and select "Redeem" to transfer the points to your account. If you don't have a card, select "Buy Nintendo DSi Points with a Credit Card." Choose your number of points and a credit-card option, then fill in the required personal information to complete your purchase. The DSi Shop accepts Visa and MasterCard.
Using DSi Points
Browse the DSi Shop for downloads. Choose "Start Shopping," then "DSiWare." You can search for games by title, genre or publisher, or choose free, 200, 500 or 800+ to search by cost. When you've made your decision, press the "Download" button and choose "Yes" to confirm the download. The game download appears in the list of applications in the DSi's main menu. Select the game from this list and tap on its icon to start the application.
