Atari 2600 Games for Nintendo DS

While the glory days of the Atari 2600 -- one of the first mass-marketed home video gaming consoles -- have long passed, many of the classic games from this system live on. Several compilations for the Nintendo DS offer players the chance to revisit classic titles such as "Asteroids," "Space Invaders" and "Missile Command."
  1. Retro Atari Classics

    • The 2005 release "Retro Atari Classics" offers 10 classic Atari games, including some lesser known titles like "Tempest," "Warlords," "Sprint" and "Lunar Lander." This cartridge offers game both in their original form and in new "Tagged" art styles inspired by modern graffiti artists such as Obey Giant, Delta and Reas.

    Atari's Greatest Hits: Vol. 1

    • The "Atari Greatest Hits: Vol. 1" collection offers a whopping 50 games from the Atari collection. These includes such favorites as "Centipede," "Pong," "Missile Command" and "Asteroids." This 2010 game offers both single-player and turn-taking multiplayer action. The options in the game allow you to change the same settings that were available on the Atari 2600, including difficulty level for each controller and color or black and white.

    Atari's Greatest Hits: Vol. 2

    • The second compilation, called "Atari Greatest Hits: Vol. 2," digs deeper into the company library to offer Atari 2600 games such as "Crystal Castles," "Breakout and "Star Raiders," as well as later games like "Asteroids Deluxe" and "Millipede." This 2011 title also includes 50 games from the Atari vault, as well as multiplayer play.

    Space Invaders Extreme

    • For the 30th anniversary of the arcade and Atari 2600 classic, Taito reinvents the Earth defense game for a new generation with "Space Invaders Extreme." You still must quickly dispatch aliens slowly dropping to the ground, but the difficulty increases in this 2008 title as each alien type has new abilities that make it tricky to shoot and dodge. This updates the sounds and graphics from the original and offers both local and online multiplayer play.
