How to Chop a Tree in Pokemon

In every version of Pokemon, tiny trees block player progression through certain areas. These trees are distinguishable from other trees because of their small size and different style than trees that can't be cut. Chopping down these trees requires a Pokemon move called "Cut." Cut is the first hidden machine (HM) available to players in every version of the Pokemon games. It can be learned by most Pokemon, and is taught through the item "HM01." Players must defeat the first gym leader before they can use the move outside of battle.

Instructions

  Obtain HM01. In every version of Pokemon besides the first generation and its remakes, you will naturally obtain HM01 after starting the game and before the first gym battle by following the storyline. In generation one, you will find HM01 in the Captain's Quarters of the S.S. Anne.

  Defeat the first gym leader. After you defeat the gym leader, you will obtain a gym badge.

  Teach Cut to one of your Pokemon. Open your bags and locate HM01 in the "HMs &TMs" tab. Select "Use" on the item and it will show you which of your Pokemon are able or unable to learn the move.

  Find a small tree. They are usually located on the side of routes.

  Press "A" while facing the tree. It will ask you if you want to cut down the tree. Select "Yes." The tree will disappear and you can proceed through it.
