How to Get a Water Type Pokemon Without Using the Good Rod in Soul Silver

Water Pokemon in "Pokemon SoulSilver" are usually found in the water and caught with a fishing rod. If you do not have the Good Rod, there are alternative fishing rods available. These are the Old Rod, found early in the game, and the Super Rod, found later in the game when you reach Kanto. It is also possible to obtain the water type Pokemon Totodile, Squirtle and Mudkip without using a fishing rod. You can get these from the starter Pokemon sets offered to you throughout the game.

Instructions

Starter Pokemon

  Choose Totodile at the start of the game when you pick your first Pokemon.

  Obtain all 16 gym badges and then defeat Red. Go to Professor Oak in Pallet Town and talk to him. Choose Squirtle when he offers you a Pokemon.

  Go to the Silph Co. building in Saffrom City and talk to Steven Stone after you defeat Red. Choose the blue stone when he offers you a choice and you will receive Mudkip.
Old Rod

  Enter the Pokemon Center near the entrance to Union Cave, at the southern end of Route 32.

  Talk to the old man inside who wants to pawn the Old Rod.

  Accept the Old Rod when he offers it to you.
Super Rod

  Go to Route 12 in Kanto and enter the fishing guru's house.

  Talk to the man inside.

  Tell him that you love fishing to receive the Super Rod.
