How to Get Fossils in Heartgold

In most "Pokemon" games, players received one of two different fossils that could be revived. "Pokemon HeartGold" from 2010 only rewarded fossils to players that destroyed boulders. The move "Rock Smash" has to be used for this action. Depending on what area the player is in, the move could produce either the Helix or Claw fossil. The fossils do appear at random so using "Rock Smash" is not a guarantee to get either one.

Instructions

  Put a Pokemon capable of learning Rock Smash in your party. Most Pokemon are capable of learning this move (see resources).

  Fly to Violet City and travel west out of the city on Route 36. Talk to the man near the large tree that blocks your path. He will give you "HM08," which is the Pokemon move Rock Smash. Teach it to one of your Pokemon.

  Take the route leading south to the Ruins of Alph. Use Rock Smash on the boulders that appear all over the zone. You have a chance to discover the Helix Fossil here.

  Travel to Route 47, which is west of Cianwood City. Go into the caves and break more rocks. The Claw Fossil can be found here.
