How to Make Skins for the R4i

The R4 series of Nintendo DS flash cards have provided media enhancement and backup game support for numerous versions of the Nintendo DS line. The R4i, the newest version of the R4 card, allows users to customize the skin or theme of the menu. Skins are stored in a folder on the internal microSD card of the R4i card. You can create custom skins using freeware applications, such R4 Theme Creator Alice.

Instructions

  Download the R4 Theme Creator Alice zip file. Unpackage the contents to a convenient location.

  Open the application.

  Click "Open" and select a picture for the top screen background. Drag the slider bar above the image to zoom in or out. Move the scrollbars below and to the right of the image to pan the image.

  Click the "Icon Screen" tab and add a background image.

  Click the "Game Icon" tab and select an image to represent the game menu. Repeat for the "Media Icon" and "Slot2 Icon," which corresponds with the lower slot on the Nintendo DS.

  Add background images to the "File Screen" and "Info Screen" tabs.

  Click the "Export Theme" button, which resembles a folder with a downward-pointing arrow.

  Enter a name for the theme, then enter your name.

  Click "Choose" and set a location for the theme to be exported to.

  Remove the microSD card from your R4i and insert it into the USB connector. Insert the connector into an open USB port on your computer.

  Open "My Computer" and open the "Removable Disk" corresponding with the microSD card.

  Open the "R4iMenu" folder and "Skin" folder.

  Create a new folder and name it based on your custom skin.

  Copy your skin into your new folder.

  Reinsert the microSD card into the R4i card and insert the R4i into your Nintendo DS system. Enter the R4i menu.

  Touch the icon on the far right to open the settings. Select your skin from the skin list at the bottom right.
