How to Rewire Your DS

The Nintendo DS (DS) is a handheld gaming console introduced in 2004. In 2006, a newer version, Nintendo DS Lite, was released. If you think the wiring for your DS Lite needs to be replaced, you can remove and install new wiring yourself without paying a professional to replace it for you -- if you are willing to risk voiding your warranty.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the screw that is connected to the battery's door. Pry the battery out using a pry tool. Pry out the two rubber protectors that are at the bottom of the DS using a flat blade screwdriver to reveal the two small Phillips screws; unscrew them. Unscrew the two screws that were underneath the battery. Use a Tri-Wing screwdriver to unscrew the screw that is located at the right edge of the battery slot and the two screws on the back of the DS. Unscrew the screw that is on the DS game slot using a Tri-Wing screwdriver.

    • 2

Pry off the front case from the back case by running a pry tool around the creases of the cases. Then pull off the bottom case. Remove the two trigger buttons located on the top edge of your front screen. Then use a flat blade screwdriver to lift up the wire that is connected to the top and then slide the wire underneath the game card slot to thread it, gently, out and away.

Remove the screws that are holding the motherboard to the top screen using a tiny Phillips screwdriver. Pry out the wire near the top of the motherboard using a flat blade screwdriver. Pry out the little ribbon from its connector located at the top of the motherboard near the opening of the card slot.

Lift up the motherboard and the screen away from the front case to reveal the ribbon cable. Use a flat blade screwdriver to lift the tab to remove the ribbon from its connector. The screen will still be on the motherboard. Release the ribbon cable by lifting the tab using a flat blade screwdriver and then remove the screen. Pry out the four tabs that are connected to the front plastic screen assembly to reveal the screws by using an X-Acto blade.

    • 5

Unscrew the four screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Press the plastic back of the assembly upward to loosen the back plastic case from the front plastic case and use a pry tool to remove the back plastic case. Turn the plastic assembly over to remove the hinge screws that hold the white cable in place. Once the screws for the hinges are removed, take out the white cable.

    • 6

Thread the white and black wires and ribbon cable out of the hinge. Peel off the white tape that is holding the screen and wires in place. Lift the screen and then thread the wires and the ribbon cable through the other part of the hinge. Wrap the ribbon cable around the wires in a circular position to remove it out of the circular hinge. The wires are then released. Replace the wires. Reassemble all parts and you're done.
