How M3 DS Flashing Works

The M3DS Real is a flash cart for the Nintendo DS handheld gaming console. Flash carts allow players to create and save backup copies of their games and use homebrew (user-created) content on their DS.
  1. M3DS Vs. a Normal Nintendo DS Game

    • The M3DS works essentially the same as a Nintendo DS game. The cartridges are the same size, and both are inserted into the Nintendo DS' top slot, slot-1, where they're read the same way by the DS. The difference is that, instead of having a game stored on the cartridge, the M3DS has a MicroSD card slot where the user stores their own data to run on their DS.

    Firmware and Software

    • Nintendo DS flash carts generally work the same in that the user puts firmware--software to make the M3DS usable--onto the MicroSD card. The firmware allows players to access the data on the card through their DS, also allowing them to play or use Nintendo DS-compatible files.

    Transferring the Files

    • Getting the files, backup games and homebrew applications from your computer to your Nintendo DS requires the use of a USB MicroSD card reader. These devices allow you to access the MicroSD card on your computer. Once you've made your backups and downloaded the homebrew content you want, you simply drag and drop it to the SD card, where you'll then be able to use the files and data you just added to the card on your Nintendo DS by inserting the card into the M3DS and insert the M3DS into your Nintendo DS.
