Wii RVLSWC Vs. RVL100

By the beginning of 2010, Nintendo's Wii console -- defined by its revolutionary motion controls -- had sold 67 million units around the world. Taking an ̶0;if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach, Nintendo has modified the console sparingly since its release in 2006. As such, variations of the system, indicated by model numbers or retailer codes, do not feature drastically different options or modes of operation.
  1. RVLSWC

    • The code RVLSWC serves as a simple code for retailers to identify the most common variation of the Wii console, model number RVL-001, originally released in November of 2006. This version of the console comes in glossy white and features backwards compatibility with Nintendo GameCube games and controllers. It includes a base to accommodate horizontal orientation and a standard Wii remote without Wii MotionPlus functionality. Code RVLSWC indicates a standard bundle that includes the ̶0;Wii Sports̶1; game disc. This model originally retailed for $250.

    RVL-100 Series

    • Wii model number RVL-101 kicked off the RVL-100 series of the Wii. Known as the ̶0;Wii Family Edition,̶1; this console -- the first major revision of the Wii -- hit the market in October 2011. This variation loses Nintendo GameCube controller and game compatibility and does not have the four GameCube controller ports featured on top of the RVL-001. The RVL-101 sports a slightly slimmer form factor than the RVL-001 and sits horizontally rather than vertically. The Family Edition launched at $150 and includes a Wii remote with Wii MotionPlus functionality. As of February 2012, Nintendo has not announced any further entries in the RVL-100 series of Wii consoles.

    Common Features

    • All Wii consoles feature motion-sensing controllers that translate body movement and pointing gestures into gameplay, with the standard Nunchuck attachment adding traditional analog controls. This console features Internet connectivity via Wi-Fi, offering downloads of new and classic games, Web browsing, online play and Netflix compatibility. With optional component cables, the Wii outputs resolutions up to 480p.

    Other Variations

    • The RVL-001 -- the console sold under the RVLSWC retailer code -- and RVL-101 model numbers indicate the functionality of the Wii console itself. The contents of the box and cosmetic features of the console come in additional varieties. Variations of the RVL-001 include a glossy black model and models that come bundled with games such as ̶0;Mario Kart Wii̶1; and ̶0;Wii Sports Resort,̶1; as well as a limited-edition red model with ̶0;New Super Mario Bros. Wii.̶1; The latter two bundles include a Wii MotionPlus remote. In addition to a white bundle with ̶0;Wii Sports̶1; and ̶0;Wii Party,̶1; the RVL-101 comes in black with ̶0;New Super Mario Bros. Wii̶1; and a copy of the ̶0;Super Mario Galaxy̶1; soundtrack. In November of 2011, Wal-Mart sold a limited edition blue RVL-101. All Wii variations include a sensor bar, A/C adapter, composite video cables and Wii Nunchuck controller.
