How to Fix the Wii 4.2 Brick

A malfunctioning Wii is often referred to as a "Brick" because without it properly working, the Wii console becomes as useless as a stone brick in the video game world. Bricking occurs when users tamper with the Wii firmware and destroy the data. Though you may lose created Mii, game save content and downloaded software from the Wii Shop, you can still restore a Wii System 4.2 to its original state and remove the problem that caused it to brick in the first place.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Wii console to shut it down.

    • 2

Insert a Gamecube controller into the fourth slot on the top of the Wii.

    • 3

Insert a newer Wii game disc into the console. These discs automatically come with the system updates that can restore your system back to the 4.2 system menu or higher. Examples include "New Super Mario Bros. Wii," "Epic Mickey," "EA Sports Active" or any official Nintendo game from 2010 and on.

    • 4

Press the "Power" button on the Wii console. Right before the start menu appears, hold down all four of the "D-pad" buttons on the Gamecube controller. This will load an automatic boot of the game disc.

    • 5

Press "OK" to update the Wii system menu. Wait for the Wii menu to update. This will take several minutes as Nintendo downloads, installs and restores the Wii system menu.

    • 6

Press the "Home" button when the game loads. Select the "Wii Menu" option. Your Wii menu should be restored now. All of the virtual console games will likely be gone, including the "Homebrew Channel."
