Purpose
The purpose of modifying a Wii gaming console is to unlock restricted features, create new features, change the user interface design, install "homebrew" games (those created by amateurs) and access different Wiimote controller configurations. You can modify a console machine in two ways: the "softmod" method, which involves installing special software, and "hard-modding," which involves installing a compatible modchip inside the console.
Serial Number
To check the serial number of your Wii, turn it on its side and look at the bottom. You will see a bar code, the words "Serial No." and the actual serial number listed here. To find out which drive type you have, go to wiidrives.com/list and search for your serial number. Once you've matched the serial number prefix, go across that row to the DVD Drive Chip column and look at the last few characters after the hyphen. For example, GC2-D2E is the drive chip code, but for the purposes of getting a modchip you'll need to know only the D2E part.
Search
You must next find a modchip manufacturer who makes a chip for that particular drive code. Some modchips are compatible with multiple drive types; check with a few sellers before making your modchip purchase.
Solderless Modchips
One of the best ways to get the modchip correctly and quickly installed is to shop for a solderless chip. Solderless modchips require no soldering skills or extra equipment, and come with easy-to-follow instructions. Some chips snap right onto the ribbon cable that connects to the drive, while others snap over the existing chipset on the Wii motherboard. If you purchase a modchip that requires soldering, make sure you have the proper equipment and a basic understanding of how to solder electronics before you start the modification.
