Size of a Wii Controller

The Nintendo Wii console utilizes remote controllers that communicate wirelessly with the main Wii console through optical sensors. To achieve this wireless connection without affecting game play, Nintendo has developed a series of Wii controllers that are stylistically much different than traditional gaming controllers. The first generation of Wii controllers are fairly small in size, while the Wii U remote controller is much larger and features an interactive touch screen.
  1. Wii Remote

    • The Wii remote controller, also referred to as a Wiimote, is styled like a traditional television remote and is similar in size. According to the official product dimensions as reported by Amazon.com, a Wii remote weighs 7.4 ounces and its dimensions are 9 inches by 7.2 inches by 0.5 inches. This creates a controller that can be easily gripped by one hand for both motion play through the Wii's optical sensor system and button control for more traditional gameplay.

    Wii Nunchuk

    • Many Wii console games also require the use of the Wii Nunchuk, which attaches to the Wii remote controller through a connection cable. According to official product details released on Amazon.com, the Wii Nunchuk attachment weighs 5.1 ounces; its dimensions are 9 inches by 7 inches by 2.2 inches. Compared to the rectangular shape of the Wiimote, the Wii Nunchuk features a curved style that is designed to let a player grip the Nunchuk tightly but comfortably.

    Wii U Controller

    • In June 2011, Nintendo unveiled a new console in the Wii series, known as Wii U. Nintendo has also developed a new controller to be used specifically with the Wii U. The main feature of the new Wii U controller is its 6.2-inch touch screen, which is used to display game information that complements the main gameplay displayed on a television or other monitor. The size of the touch screen is about halfway between the size of the touch-screen displays on the iPad and iPhone, according to the "Wall Street Journal."

    Size Comparison

    • According to British technology news and review website Electricpig, the size of the new Wii U controller is roughly the size of seven original Wii remote controllers laid side-by-side. The Wii U controller is also larger than the entire first-generation Wii console, about 10 percent longer and 24 percent wider than the Wii console according to Electricpig. The Wii U touch screen is also three times larger than the touch screen contained on the Nintendo DS, the second-largest touch screen in the Nintendo gaming series.
