How to Make an Easy Pen for the Wii Remote Smartboard

The Wii remote smart board uses an infrared light pen to draw and play games. If you lost your pen or want to make an extra one, you can do it with a few simple steps. Powered by a single AA battery, the pen will work with or without a casing. Even if you do not understand basic wiring or electronics, you can still complete this project and use the pen on your Wii.

Things You'll Need

  • Single infrared LED light with 940nm and 1.7 volts
  • AA Battery
  • Thick Highlighter
  • Pliers
  • Knife
  • Duct tape

Instructions

    • 1

Peel back the bottom negative side of the battery label to reveal a small ridge in the battery shape.

    • 2

Bend the longer positive side of the LED light. It hangs slightly lower than the negative side. Curve it into a semi-circle about the size of the battery.

    • 3

Slide the curved wire into the curve of the battery. Place the battery cover label back and press down to secure the wire inside.

    • 4

Bend the loose wire into itself to form a curved loop. Press the wire down to the top of the battery and the LED light will turn on as long as you press it down.

    • 5

Use a pair of pliers to remove the top ink section of a highlighter. Discard the ink and the top of the marker so you just have the empty shaft.

    • 6

Cut a small slit down the side of the shaft to leave room for the wire switch.

    • 7

Slide the battery and LED light into the highlighter casing. Secure the end with a small piece of duct tape. Keep the LED light centered as you apply the tape.

    • 8

Add a small piece of tape over the switch for more comfort while drawing. Test out the Easy Pen when you play the Wii.
