The Resolution of the Wii

The default resolution for the Wii is 480i -- the same resolution as a standard-definition television -- using the standard RCA plugs on the in-box AV cable. This is an analog, non-progressive resolution compatible with both SDTV and HDTV. If you're using your Wii with an HDTV, you can change the resolution to 480p via component video, which uses progressive scan and improves the video and color quality on your HDTV. Unfortunately, the Wii resolution does not exceed 480.
  1. AV Cable

    • The Wii comes with a proprietary AV cable, which has a specialized connector only compatible with the console. The end that connects to your television uses standard yellow, red and white RCA plugs -- yellow for video and red and white for audio. With this cable you can only set your Wii to 480i. The benefit of this cable, however, is that it's compatible with nearly all televisions; even HDTVs typically have RCA ports.

    Component Video Cable

    • Component cords are high-definition, analog video cords, which use three colored plugs for video: one which sets the brightness, and two which work with color. Like composite (RCA) cables, this includes a red and white plug for audio. Component video offers a clearer picture than composite. This cable must be purchased separately, either through Nintendo's online store or through most major retail websites and brick-and-mortar stores. Even though component video can handle up to 1080p, the Nintendo cord does not exceed 480p.

    Choosing a Cable

    • If you have an HDTV that supports 480p, using the component cable gives you the best possible graphics available on the Wii console. Component settings are available on most HDTVs and are color-coded like composite cables, making them easy to set up. However, it is not compatible with SDTVs and does represent an additional cost; as of the date of publication, the component video cable sells for $30 on the Nintendo store.

    Wii Screen Settings

    • In addition to changing the resolution settings for your Wii, you can also change the screen ratio, toggle the burn-in reduction settings and reposition the Wii display on your screen. Open the Wii systems menu using the Wii button on the main menu and select "Screen." To change between SDTV and HDTV, select "TV Resolution" and choose the relevant option. Screen position lets you move your display left or right on your television. Widescreen settings change whether your display is in 4:3 or 16:9 -- 4:3 is the standard for most SDTVs, while 16:9 is the standard for widescreen televisions. You can toggle whether burn-in reduction is on or off; this settings dims the Wii display when idle.
