What Is Needed to Hook Up a Wii to a Projector Screen?

The Nintendo Wii comes bundled with both a sensor bar and an A/V cable for hooking up to a projector. Setting up the Wii with a projector enables game play and Wii use on a large screen or flat surface. You may need extension cables or video cable couplers to extend the A/V hookup, but it depends on the distance between the projector and the Wii.
  1. Projector

    • The Nintendo Wii has no way to hook up to a projector screen without a projector, so a projector is the most important item you'll need. A newer projector will have the proper inputs and outputs for the Wii A/V (audio/video) cable. If you do have an older projector, you may need an additional adapter. When setting up the location, keep in mind that the Wii's A/V connecting cable extends to only eight feet. To create a properly projected image the projector needs to be at the opposite side of the room from the Wii.

    A/V Cables

    • To create a connection between the projector and the Nintendo Wii requires A/V (audio/video) cables that are called connectors. These connectors connect the Wii to the projector and also connect the Wii to your stereo system. The Wii needs to be hooked up normally to the stereo system as an outlet for the sound and audio. The video portion of the connector cable connects to the projector for the video to transmit. You may need a video cable coupler, or several, to connect multiple video cables together if the distance between the Wii and the projector is greater than eight feet.

    Sensor Bar

    • The Nintendo Wii senses the projected image from the projector with a sensor bar. The sensor bar needs to be positioned in such a way that it captures the projected image and projects it onto the desired surface, whether you are using a screen or a blank wall. Sensor bars come bundled with the Nintendo Wii or you can purchase one separately. The sensor bar connects via cable to the Wii.

    Extension Cables

    • Extension cables for the Nintendo Wii A/V cable are available for separate purchase. The only reason you may need extension cables is if the distance between the Wii and the projector is greater than the length of the connector cable you already have. Extension cables and video cable couplers extend the connector cable, giving you a greater distance of projection.
