How to Unbrick a Wii Without a Modchip

A modchip is a piece of hardware that allows the user to install custom software on the Wii, or other consoles. This process will void your Wii's warranty and can potentially render the console unusable (bricked). If you are having trouble with the Wii, and it is not modded with a modchip, you can reformat the system. Reformatting erases the console's internal memory, restoring it to its factory defaults.

Instructions

    • 1

Restart the Wii console. Press and hold the "+" and "-" buttons on the Wii remote when the "Health" warning appears on screen to enter "Maintenance Mode." Click "OK" when notified of entering the safe mode.

    • 2

Click the "Wii Settings" option in the lower-left-hand corner of the screen, select "System Settings."

    • 3

Navigate to the third page of the System Settings menu and select "Format System Memory."

    • 4

Click "Format" in the warning dialog to confirm the action. The console's memory will be erased and reformatted. Once reformatted, the system will reboot and should work as normal.
